A brief history of the Spanish language
The language takes its name from Spain, a region located in Western Europe. In the age of the Roman Empire, people in Spain spoke a form of Latin that eventually became the Spanish language.
During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, the Spanish conquest brought the language to the Americas. Therefore, Spanish is the official language in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina; it is also spoken in the Philippines and by more than 52 million people in the United States.
How many people speak Spanish?
There are many Spanish speaking countries, which makes Spanish the second most spoken native language, with 470 million native speakers, only preceded by the Chinese. Over 550 million people speak Spanish, if we include people who have learned it. Internationally, after English, it is also the second most used language to communicate in.
The culture of Spanish speaking countries
Among the reasons for learning Spanish is not only the number of people who speak it.
